袁绍得知刘备在汝南招兵买马，十分生气，想起兵讨伐刘备。他手下的谋士劝阻道：“万万不可。刘备不足为虑，我们目前要对付的是曹操。”袁绍觉得有道理。袁绍和曹操是当今天下势力最大的两个诸侯，为了争夺地盘，迟早会刀兵相会。

为了消灭曹操，袁绍率七十万大军在官渡大战曹军，双方打打停停，持续了两个多月。曹操见军中粮草快要耗尽，忙派人去许昌送信，叫荀彧想办法筹集。

谁知，送信人被袁军捉住，押去见袁绍的谋士许攸。许攸把信交给袁绍，并提议说：“曹操主力被我军困在官渡，目前许昌空虚，而曹军主力缺乏粮草，正是我们进攻的好机会。如果我们兵分两路袭击官渡和许昌，曹操就跑不掉了。”袁绍顾虑许攸年轻时和曹操是好朋友，不太相信他的话，怀疑是曹操的诱敌之计。

正在这时，有人诬告许攸滥收财物。袁绍大怒，痛骂许攸：“你一定是收了曹操的钱财来我这儿给他当奸细。快滚出去，别让我再见到你！”许攸十分失望，一怒之下就去投奔曹操。

曹操刚脱了衣服休息，听说许攸来了，高兴得来不及穿鞋，光着脚跑出来迎接。曹操把许攸拥进营帐，跪地向许攸行大礼以示尊重。

许攸十分感动，向曹操献计说：“袁绍的大批粮草都堆放在乌巢，你若派人冒充袁军去烧掉袁绍在乌巢的粮库，袁军必定不战自乱。”曹操听了十分欣喜。
