曹操听说周瑜死了，便想派兵讨伐孙权。他担心西凉太守马腾在他率军南下时乘机来袭，便召马腾到许昌议事，趁机将他杀害。

WhenCaoCaoheardthatZhouYuwasdead,hewantedtosendhistroopstoattackSunQuan.HewasafraidthatMaTeng,themagistrateofXiliang,wouldtaketheopportunitytoattackhimwhenhewasmarchingsouthwardwithhistroops.SohecalledMaTengtothecityofXuchangforameetingandtooktheopportunitytokillMaTeng.

马腾的儿子马超留守凉州，听说父亲被曹操杀死，恨得咬牙切齿，发誓要亲手杀了曹操，为父亲报仇。这时西凉太守韩遂给马超送来一封信。这封信是曹操写给韩遂的，让韩遂捉拿马超。马超气得怒发冲冠，立即领兵二十万去攻打曹操。

马超率领的军队一路上势如破竹，一直杀到潼关地区。曹操不得不放弃南下攻打孙权的计划，亲自率兵到达潼关，砍树打桩，安宁扎寨，抵挡马超。马超早已严阵以待。曹操遥望西凉兵个个身强体壮，矫健勇猛；再看那马超，面白唇红，肩宽腰细，手握长枪，英俊勇武，心中不由得暗暗惊叹。

马超见曹军众将簇拥着一个身穿红袍的人来到阵前，知道是曹操，顿时气上心头，大骂：“曹贼，你杀死我父亲，此仇不共戴天！”说完，挺枪杀了过来。曹操身后的于禁连忙迎战。斗了八九个回合，于禁败下阵来。张郃赶紧出战，不到二十个回合也败走回阵。
